On the 22nd of November, Interact Club of SMKSS17 paid a visit to Charis Old Folk's Home in Puchong that was planned by our Community Service Director Xin Xing and Vice Jayanthi.
After meeting the woman in charge of the old folk's home, we were quickly given our task which was.... *drumroll 'Assorting Party hats!' haha. We were all surprised by the amount of hats that was slowly but steadily prepared by the elders.
After Financial Service Director Jessica did some cleaning, the rest of us helped to carry the SUPER heavy boxes filled with party hats. We thought "There goes our back!" But the male-less bod made way and did it! But that was only step 1.
Step 2 : Arranging the party hats by pattern and cutting. By the end of step 2, we were already sweating our guts out and gasping for water. Hahaha the elders are going to sell these party hats to raise funds during the Christmas season around the corner. It was a random job but we were happy to do it! =)
Step 3: Each box must have 500 party hats of all 8 designs. After doing the math, we decided each hat has 62 for every box and then we randomly take 4 hats to add to 500. =D That took us like 15 minutes to figure out. =( We also have to be done by 2pm. Oh great..... How many hats were in our presence? 12000+ and it was already nearing 12pm...
We sorted the mixed hats into groups, we counted seriously A LOT of hats in form of 62 each pattern, we all had minor papercuts. Hahaha. We had some problems along the way like very few cardboard boxes available, we thought there was only 4 designs but each design had 2 types of cutting, the lady in charge even asked us to taped the boxes, and of course the limited time left. But we all never gave up and did our best! Go Go Go!! =D
Morever, it wasn't easy to count every hat till 62 and it's especially excruciating when we lost count. Hahah It was almost impossible to fit 500 hats into one box but our "compressing team" Jaya, Yi Xuan, Annesha and Ying Yee was victorious! WOOT!
Alas, it was almost time to go. Xin Xing called 2 taxi drivers to come pick us up. By the end of the day, we managed to complete SEVENTEEN boxes. Our teamwork made it through! Haha. We felt guilty for not staying longer but we sorta helped them out by arranging half of the remaining hats into groups of 62. So they won't have to count just put them into boxes. All together we completed 10500 party hats!!!! Oh yeahhhh! xDD
We took a group picture and a picture together with the elders. C:
All of us can feel the sadness inside every old folk. When they were so happy to see us and grateful for our help, that just felt like a stabbing heart in all of us. They don't deserve this. sigh... so we should all cherish our parents and be there for them every single step of the way. We not only learned teamwork, we also learned that no one gets left behind. (:
So all of us were really famished. Even the free 'keropok' given weren't close to enough. =D The taxi drivers were late and by the time they arrived, it was 2.45 pm. We all decided to eat Mc Donalds but that dream is slowly slipping away by the minute.. Ohhhh noooo! The taxi drivers all drove fast and we all kept thinking "We're not going to make it!!! ):" It felt like "The Amazing Race". Fortunately the driver was skilled and knew the shortest way to get there (the ss15 McD's) and we made it just 3 minutes before 3pm. Man... it was a tiring day. Then we all enjoyed our late lunch and even goofed around the playground in full view of the 'smoking area' outside. Darn. hahahaha
